The Evolving MSSE Programs... Introducing in 2014

The faculty and staff at WVU’s Lane Department of Computer Science and Electrical Engineering (LDCSEE) have been working on improving the current Software Engineering Programs. We have several new things in store for the program that will become more obvious as the website is updated with new program changes.

First, Dr. James Mooney, Program Director, retired from WVU after several years of success running the programs; handing over the reigns to me, Dale G. Dzielski.
Second, last year brought a new look to the MSSE website; making it uniform with the look and feel of the entire Statler College of Engineering and Mineral Resources.
Third, we began accepting students as Provisional Graduate Students instead of Non-Degree Students; unless you are in the Software Engineering Certificate Program.
Fourth, we began reviewing the programs under a newly instituted national initiative called Quality Matters; focused upon improving the quality of online courses.
Fifth, we piloted the New eCampus and went live with the new Blackboard Learn 9 platform and Collaborate product on January 8, 2014 with all of our SPRING 2014 courses.
Sixth, we began this blog to interest prospective students in the programs as well as inform current students in the program.

Introducing in 2014… we are working on several new efforts as well as continuing those efforts mentioned above for the program. With the new features in eCampus we are working to transform many of the current courses from a traditional lecture format to a more dynamic, interactive format enriching the learning experience for our students. We are looking at revising the course offerings to include management and technical course tracks beyond the core courses. We are looking to include more on campus faculty in the program such as offering this SUMMER 2014, the Department Chair Dr. Brian Woerner’s class Introduction to Computer Security Management. We are in the process of approval for several of our advanced courses to become permanent courses in the program. We are continuing the Quality Matters review of our programs. We are exploring the use of MOOC’s through the new Academic Innovation# using a contract WVU has with Coursera to offer an entirely self-paced course as a part of the MSSE Program. We are integrating the educational experience with industry by collaborating with organizations such as Elon Musk’s spaceX.com on the design of the Hyperloop as a class project and in the quality software management class working with scientists from ALMA and Green Bank on the International collaboration for the requirements of the next generation viewer for Radio Astronomy. We are training future software engineering leaders today.

As you can see WVU is working hard to make your educational experience the best education found anywhere on the planet and delivered directly to you at your home, office, or laptop where ever it may be.
