Online SENG Faculty Dr. Lawrence "Larry" Jacowitz a.k.a. "Dr. J"

This month's blog is to introduce Dr. Lawrence Jacowitz, retired IBM Program Manager for NASA projects and Lecturer with the Lane Department Computer Science and Electrical Engineering at West Virginia University.

He has been a part-time Instructor in the M.S. program in Software Engineering, covering the courses in the project management series.  He teaches SENG 510 Software Project Management and the new advanced course Strategies for Managing Software Projects for this program.  Please watch his video introduction to learn more about him: https://youtu.be/yxZ9bov0pY4.

His education is from two note-worthy academic institutions with a PhD and M.S. in chemical engineering from Ohio State University and B.S. in chemical engineering from M.I.T.

Dr. J's professional life is truly amazing.  He was employed by Aerothermodynamics as a Senior Engineer.  He later took employment with Martin-Marietta as a Manager for Military Requirements Analysis.  He then made home at IBM with positions as a Project Manager, Program Manager, and Proposal Manager for a variety of federal programs some highlighted in his video introduction.  Some of these programs included NASA Skylab, space station, and the space shuttle.  He worked on Air Force satellites programs as well as Departments of Energy, Agriculture, Justice, and DARPA studies.  His academic experience outside of this program includes instructing for Northrop University (solar energy), IBM Faculty Loan Scholar at California State University – Dominguez Hills  (environmental studies), and Fairmont State University (MBA).

His academic interests include:

  • Teaching the secrets of project management
  • Software project management
  • Analyzing the role of complexity in system design and implementation
It is no doubt obvious by just asking any of his students that sharing his wealth of experience and knowledge with others is his current favorite past-time.
